Dog Races!

Flash & Jan found the Mardi Gras Casino at the four hour mark of their days journey while enroute to North Topsail Beach, NC. Thursday night must have been dog racing night, and our rig was backed up to the track. We were able to enjoy several races, and luckily, the action came to an end at 9 PM; bed time.

OMG – We got kicked out! That’s a first and of course it was all my fault. Math has never been my strong suit. If I need a spot from the 25th through the 30th, then that is  five nights right? Well it turns out you need six nights, not five. The camp host and the folks in the Grand Design Imagine were all very pleasant and patient while we did a speedy pack up and roll out. Lucky for us KOA had a spot left, and only $110.00 for the night. Good thing they gave me a veterans discount 😀

Holy moly – $110!  This is one crazy expensive parking spot! But look at the amenities; Two free KOA logo koozies, a store with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, the lake with swan pedal boats, four way ping pong, pickle ball, shuffle board… Our site came with a full size BBQ, table and four Adirondack chairs. Other sites had jacuzzis’. I wonder what those cost?

What else could we do but roll with the punches. When I saw the couple in the brand new Grand Design Imagine trailer waiting for our (their) spot I felt pretty bad, so as a group we put it into high gear and got ‘er packed up and pulled out in record time. Lucky we had our son Zac and his girlfriend Alisha visiting and they pitched right in on the fast pack ‘n go. Now we know if the weather turns bad (think tornado), or a natural disaster (think volcano) we know we can move fast.

Wyoming - Laramie KOA | Centennial & the Snowy Range

Two campgrounds in one; old and new. The new camp area takes on an Arizona style and personality – lots of colorful rock. Don’t freak out ’cause its easy to walk on, even with bare feet. Large enough that it doesn’t make its way into the camper and distinctive in its color appearance. You get two colors; dark gray/black and pink-ish. 

There is only one complaint I have; you pay for wifi, but you don’t get wifi. At least Jan Baby and I didn’t get wifi. We ended up using or cell data and phone as a hot spot. Other than that minor detail, the place was exemplary in every way.

Three nights at a cool Wyoming state campground. Cool because we left 90+ degree weather just an hour and a half south in Fort Collins to enjoy upper 70’s at Curt Gowdy. If you like to SUP (you know who you are) then you must visit. Expect 1 bar intermittent cell service and shockingly no dump station; but a really nice ranger station! Funky store and water craft rentals available. Lots of around the park hiking trails, competitive archery circuit and mountain bike specific trails and attractions. Oh, bring your camera. Most sites have a lake view. Not all sites have amenities such as electric and or water.

]]> A quick look at the Ansel Watrous Campground located along Poudre Canyon outside of Fort Collins Colorado. I hope this helps some of you looking for a beautiful place to camp in Colorado.

Drove in on a Thursday morning without reservations and paid $22.50, using my senior discount based off my America the Beautiful pass I had picked up on a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park. We were pretty lucky to get one of the ten or so sites available without a reservation! Reservations can be made through https://recreation.gov. Camp host Steve was available, outgoing and super helpful. Steve and his wife had the entire campground spotless. When he saw me backing in my GD Reflection he came down and helped get me into the site.

Ansel Waltrous was amazing camping with its level sites and OMG was it incredibly clean. The location by the river is the best part and all the camp sites have river access. Warning: If you need to be connected be aware you won’t be – there are NO SERVICES, This is akin to boondock camping with the exception that water is available. A very minor downside is how close the road is. Lucky it is a road less traveled and in most cases you cannot hear traffic, but there will be an occasional loud motorcycle truck. Once the sun sets and the nearby Mishawaka restaurant closes the traffic is virtually non-existent. What little road noise there is dies down completely at night. Additionally, the river sounds drown out most of the other noises…very relaxing.

Being right on the Poudre (pooder) River was a joy. Sunrise was especially captivating – glad I got out of the sack early. Jan Baby, the DW enjoyed the antics of the blue jays both from inside and outside the rig; Jan Baby, not the blue jays. If your here in the spring/early summer you can wave at the rafters as they float down the river. This place will keep you busy, in the 3 nights and 4 days, we got in a run up to Mishawaka (no bikers?!) – a 2 mile out and back and too logged 5 hiking miles up Young Gulch trail; right across the highway from the campsite.

Only 16 camp sites, three which are tent sites; this small campground provided amazing space and screening between sites. I even ran my generator and nobody noticed. Between the sound of the rushing river, wind in the pines and those raucous jay’s, my Champion 3400 was but a whisper. I keep it in the bed of the truck which helps manage the sound.

My advice to you should you venture this way, come mid week to score a site or get a reservation. Remember, no hookups, though water is available unless your there in late fall, winter or early spring. Fit my 34′ rig (Grand Design Reflection fiver), but wouldn’t fit anything much bigger. Bring a camera and get up early.
